What do you think is the best camera to travel with? (digital)?
Theres this idea in my head where I would want the camera to typically be small for fast shooting, “on the go” when traveling.
But I also can’t let go of the amazing quality the SLR digitals have. Its obviously not easy to take out your camera fast when it is so big. If you say otherwise, I disagree, and I have a film SLR. SOOO….
I ask because I am traveling and Thinking of the right camera to buy/bring along.
your thoughts?
This summer I traveled with a whole host of cameras. I took a Nikon D300, a Nikon D60, a Canon SD1100, and a Panasonic FZ30. The camera I most often used was the D60.
It is light, easy to use, takes fantastic photos, and is very affordable for a digital SLR. We did about 20 miles of walking every day, and the heavier D300 quickly came to be a burden. I think the D90 would also wind up being too heavy.
Although there are many super-zoom cameras, like the Z30 with long zooms built in, the response time is just too slow. The D60 is very fast at first startup and between shots. It works great in automatic mode, and has all the options you are used to in your film camera.
Although I love my 18-200mm zoom that I bought for my D300, it makes my D60 too heavy. My D60 came with a 18-55 and a 70-200. These two lenses are a great combination. For fast fun shots, leave the 70-200 in the hotel and trot around with the small camera and inconspicuous lens. For longer sight seeing trips, you can take both lenses and change on the fly.
I teach digital photography, so I see a lot of students come in with a lot of different cameras. I prefer Nikon for SLR and Canon for point n shoots. If you are traveling abroad, I would suggest also taking a small Canon SD 1100. It will come in handy when taking pictures of your food and other just fun shots.
Of course, buy extra cards, an extra battery or two, and perhaps a digital wallet, such as the “foci brand photo safe”.
