What should I look for in a new digital camera?
It’s been about 6 years, maybe more, since I last bought a new digital camera. I am definetely due for an upgrade. I have no idea how the technology has evolved over the years. What should I look for in the cameras of today?
DONT look at Pixel numbers.. this is a real common mistake with people buying cameras and often lend themselves to lower quality images and low light issues.
You should however look at pixel density as the lower this is the better your image will be in terms of low light and noise quality. BUT this does make some difference in the Size of the CCD and how many pixels there are.
Most new digital cameras have changed a lot in the past 3-4 years, so in general you will notice a big difference in the picture quality.
You may want to go down the route of buying a used Professional camera or buying a Nikon D50 which is a SLR which has Auto and some manual control, though the manual control is a little bit difficult to work out over the Semi pro D70.
New cameras will have VR IS which helps keeping the image blur free.
Lens on most camera are the most important factor, longer zooms in cheaper cameras often means poor quality lenses which can cause distortions to the images at certain lengths and also mixed lengths.
Generally speaking Digital cameras today offer convenient photography for those who don’t want to think much about photography and setting up the camera for perfect shots as the processors in the cameras and the modes offer a library of choice to help.
If you are into your photography and use a camera a lot then a DSLR could be a way forward, you will not be limited to lens restrictions as you can always buy another lens, better flashes, filters etc.
With point and shoot compact cameras, what you buy you will always have and there is little you can change or add to it for improvement. But it is preset, easy to use and pocket sized.
