i use a simple digital camera,and want to upgrade to a camera that takes action shots?
i spend alot of time taking pics of my 2 dogs…but when it comes to action shots,by the time ive pressed the button,ive missed the action..takes too long to click,i spent 259,on sony cybershot..but it just misses the action shots.anyone know of a good camera,not too complicated i could buy..was thinking of a slr,but seems complicated to me,as only ever used a small digital camera
The key to action shots is readiness, you need to have the correct exposure, the correct focus and the correct flash power (when using the flash) before the action happens.
Then when it does happen you need a good continuous drive to catch the action. Anything above 2 fps is fine, and you really need a decent sized image buffer.
This shot for example I manually exposed and manually focussed. Then I just shot bursts until I had it absolutely right. http://www.flickr.com/photos/ciao_chao/4142418100/ So this machine gun technique isn’t the best, but birds don’t exactly stay very still.
So what you need is a manual focus capable camera with manual exposure and burst mode. This means a bridge or SLR.
£150 would get you a used Canon 300D with 18-55mm kit lens
£300 would get you a Sony A230 with 18-55mm kit lens or Olympus E420 with 14-42mm kit lens or a used Canon 20D with 18-55mm kit lens.
£350 would get you a used Canon 30D with 18-55mm kit lens (you should get it body only and then buy a 18-55mm IS lens).
£400 would get you a used Canon 30D with 17-80mm lens
£500 would get you a Canon 500D or Nikon D5000, both with 18-55mm kit lens, and at a push a used Canon 40D with 17-85mm lens.
£700-900 would get you a used Canon 1DmkII, or 5D, new Canon 50D or Nikon D90.
Basically with SLRs you can spend pretty much as much as you can think, and you will get well more and more as you dispense with more cash. Whether you need a £5000 Canon 1Ds mkIII with a £3000 lens is up to you. There is definitely an SLR for everyone, whether you just want snapshots or if you are a pro.
