How do you determine how fast a digital camera’s shutter speed is?
For example if a camera has a shutter speed of 1/1000 and another camera has a shutter speed of 1/1500, which one is faster?
1/1000 equals to 1/1000th of a second (or 1 millisecond). Therefore, 1/1500 is faster at 0.67 millisecond. That said, shutter speed is determined by the camera’s image sensor and depends on various other factors, including available light and ISO speed. For this reason, aperture rating (represented by f/some number, where lower number is better) is more accurate indication of how fast the camera’s lens is. All things being equal, lower maximum aperture rating (e.g., f/2.8) will allow faster shutter speed over higher aperture rating (e.g., f/5.6).
