What do pixels mean for a digital camera?
Is that the most important thing when selecting a digital camera?
The number of Mp on the sensor mean only one thing, how big you can print, nothing else.
6Mp is a break point in sensor size as it enables a 10″ X 8″ to be printed directly so one dot on the page closely corresponds to one pixel on the sensor (at 300dpi, which is the resolution most commercial printers use). Any more than this cannot be printed and the data is just dumped, the finer detail recorded by say a 10Mp is of no use unless you print yourself and your printer has a resolution higher than 300dpi (most can if you set it higher), or you print bigger than 10″ X 8″.
For those that doubt this, just do the maths. 10″ @ 300dpi = 3000 dots, 8″ @ 300dpi = 2400 dots, so your 10″ X 8″ print has 3000 dots on the longest side and 2400 on the short edge, which closely corresponds to the pixel count from a 6Mp sensor.
With more Mp you can of course crop the image and still have enough for a good print.
Having too many pixels on a small sensor (high pixel density) is not a good thing as the low light performance of the camera is compromised, as is the noise level. Which is why the larger sensor of a DSLR will always produce a picture with a greater tonal range and less noise than the small sensor on a compact is capable of.
