I want to buy a digital camera to give someone present. I can pay around 150 Euro. Pls tell the best choice?
i want to buy the camera cash so i need an useful suggestion to buy the best one and i can’t pay much more that 150 Euro. I’m not familiar with digital cameras so I really don’t know about the qualities of different marks of cameras. I saw a digital camera which is Samsung with 7.2 mega pixel and the price is 129 Euro. The sailor said that it is their special offers and reccomend me to buy it but I’m not sure and need your help
Buying someone a camera as a gift requires several considerations beyond merely a brand.
The first question that comes to mind is what the person wants to do with it. If the recipient is not technically adept or will simply be interested in snapping the odd picture a very simple point and shoot camera should suffice. They’re designed to do all the work leaving you free to compose and press the button. For a young child this is the ideal camera. For an adult it can be as well.
Within that category there is also the matter of size. Some cameras are not much larger than a credit card, others are thicker and more substantial. If the recipient wants or needs something that easily fits in a pocket size is a consideration. On the other hand if the person’s hands are somewhat large size is also a consideration but in this case you’d want to opt for something larger than a credit card.
Also within this category you needn’t be too concerned about resolution. Any camera from five mega pixels and up will produce lovely prints all the way to 8 x 10. There are differences between brands in terms of what the pictures look like because each manufacturer uses a different algorithm for processing the data from the sensor. As a result some cameras produce more contrast than others and so forth. These however are not quality issues, they are matters of personal taste. In each case the data is still pretty much the same and if you don’t like how the camera has rendered a picture it’s usually easy to fix it in an editor.
A long zoom would be nice for anyone but again a novice or casual user could be happy with the usual 3x zoom. Higher zooms start to cost a lot more money.
Now, if your recipient, whether child or adult, is an aspiring photographer, that is, someone who likes to take pictures and has some interest in learning about photography, things get a bit more complicated. You’re still looking at a point and shoot camera considering your budget, but in this case you might want to consider a model that gives the user some control.
Ideally you’d want a model that allows shutter and aperture priority, full manual operation, and program mode in addition to automatic. This allows your recipient to gradually learn the rudiments of exposure and begin to develop photographic skills. Associated with this kind of camera model it would be nice to also have three meters built in, a general averaging meter (which all cameras have), a centre weighted meter, and a spot meter. With a bit of practice this gives your recipient incredible creative control over how an image is exposed.
This kind of a camera is more expensive of course and you won’t find those capabilities in a credit card sized camera either, so you are looking at a larger package. But you should be able to get most of that functionality within your budget. The real killer will be the size of the zoom. If you remain at 3x you can probably find one that is affordable, if you go beyond that (zooms go all the way to 12x) you could be looking at quite an expense. Personally for a beginner I’d not belabour this, I’d simply settle for 3x.
Finally, in this category of camera I’d opt for seven mega pixels or higher because someone who wants to take control of the photographic process will also inevitably want to crop and edit images eventually. So you do need more data to do that.
So those are your camera options. There are a variety of other features that are essential but then all the cameras have them so it’s not important to list them here.
In terms of brands, I would say stay away from companies that are not in the camera business. Electronics companies like Sony build amazing electronics and their cameras reflect their talents in electronics. However, not understanding how photographers use cameras is their downfall. Often a camera from an electronics company embed all the functions in menus making it an aggravating time consuming exercise to set the camera for a given shot. Sticking with manufacturers who are in the camera business like Nikon, Canon, Pentax etc, gets you a product that is much nicer and easier to use. If you simply want a point and shoot for an occasional picture taker I guess this won’t make so much of a difference and yet even those people will be aggravated and upset if they have to go into a menu for something simply like turning on the flash.
The other consideration is to avoid makers who are proprietary. Sony and Olympus each use proprietary memory cards and other accessories. That means you’ll pay a lot more for those accessories and you won’t be able to use them on any other brand of camera when your recipient decides to upgrade. It makes more sense to select a maker that adheres to industry norms.
Generally you can’t go wrong with Nikon and Canon. Canon in fact has an incredible range of point and shoot cameras (PowerShots) that can easily address both your functional and budgetary needs. I use a Canon Powershot (a G7) as my point and shoot camera and I’m really happy with it. However I also use a Nikon D200 SLR for my serious work. That is not to say the little one isn’t good for serious work, only to say that the SLR gives me the flexibility I need for some of the subjects I tend to photograph.
Finally, most cameras come with a memory card but that’s a completely useless feature. The camera makers often supply you a card that’s good for five or six pictures before its full. That’s not enough for even a casual photographer. So when you decide on a camera, do your recipient a favour and include a memory card that it at least 512MB or better yet, 1GB in capacity. That allows for a lot of pictures before the card has to be downloaded to a computer.
Some cameras have their own battery and charger which is ok. Others use AA cells. If you opt for one of the later make sure that you have some batteries otherwise your gift can’t be used. Ideally NiMH rechargeable batteries and a charger would be preferred but your recipient can always acquire one later on. All that’s important on the day is that there are come batteries that can be used.
A case would also be nice but thankfully those are usually very inexpensive and are again something that can be acquired by your recipient later. Besides, if the camera ends up in a pocket or purse all the time, a case may not be needed.
