What’s involved in sensor cleaning on a Canon Digital Rebel XT?
I’m considering the purchase of a Canon Digital Rebel XT 8MP Digital SLR Camera. I’m told that the sensor will require periodic cleaning.
Can anyone tell me how frequently the sensor might have to be cleaned and about how much the cleaning will cost?
I’m far from being a camera expert, so any other advice would be very welcome too.

Hey, if your heart is set on a digital SLR, more power to you! The Rebel XT or XTi is a great camera that’s easy to use in automatic modes, but very flexible. You won’t soon outgrow it.
When I first got my DSLR, I had to clean the sensor twice in the first month. Since then, (3 years ago) it hasn’t needed it at all. If you observe care when you change lenses, then you and most photographers will be just fine.
1. Don’t change lenses too often. I purchased a Nikon 18-200mm VR lens for myself, just so I could keep the same lens on for virtually all situations. (Though I do changes lenses when the occasion requires)
2. When you do change lenses, do it in as dustfree an environment as possible. Obviously, you avoid doing this on windy days at the beach!
3. When you change lenses, first remove the rear lenscap from the lens. This gets it ready for a quick mount on the camera body.
4. Remove the previous lens with the camera body facing down. Dust likes to fall into camera bodies that are open and vulnerable.
5. Mount the new lens, with the body still facing downward.
6. Cap the rear of the previous lens with the protective rear lenscap as quickly as possible and put it in your camera bag.
Practice this at home. I recommend that you do it while watching tv. You should be able to do it without looking! (Hey, if I can do it with diaper-changing, than anyone can do it with lenses. lol)
Sensor cleaning products are out there, but it’s not as prevalent a problem as some make it to be. Here’s an informative article for you. If you have any more questions, please just ask!
