Should I buy a “Manufacturer refurbished” camera?
Hi all.
Ok so I am looking to buy a new camera, any one know the pros/cons of a Manufacturer refurbished product? other than they are 30 to 40% cheaper.
The camera I am looking at is the Olympus sp-800uz on ebay,

Yes, manufacturer refurbs meet manufacturer specs, but that does not really give me a lot of confidence. The problem is that if a manufacturer refurbed it, they didn’t just refurb one. It is a model that likely had a flaw, bug, operational issue or something that ran across an entire spectrum of the product or from one particular manufacturing plant/line.
One problem is that it’s really not in the best interest of the manufacturer to put the highest quality “fix” into the product, no matter what it is, because they cannot sell it as new. As a result, the discounted product goes to liquidators who sell it for a fraction of the original price. They make a profit, so imagine how cheap it goes out the door of the manufacturer. They can’t be putting much $ into it.
The other problem is that although it may meet “specifications and bench tolerances”, that may have absolutely nothing to do with the reason the product was pulled or returned in the first place.
I’ve purchased refurb’s before and with few exceptions, there’s usually something that’s not quite right about them. I wouldn’t do it again.
