Does Shutter Count Matter?
I am interested in buying a used Digital SLR, maybe a Canon Rebel or a Nikon D70 and I was curious as whether or not shutter count is a good indicator of anything. What is considered a high shutter count? Is it a good indicator of the condition of the camera? I’m trying my best to get a good used SLR at a decent price. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I guess the camera keeps track of hoe many times the shutter closes, I was looking at one ebay auction and it said the shutter count was 23,000. I’m a huge novice when it comes to Digital SLRs, I’m learning as best I can. 
Generally, a lower number of shutter actuations is more desirable when purchasing a second-hand dSLR. For budget range dSLRs, advertised life expectancy is usually 100,000 actuations but 50,000 to 100,000 releases is more realistic. It certainly plays a large role when purchasing relatively new equipment (should be fewer than a few thousand) but you should expect less as camera models grow older. I’ve read 20D owner reports of dead shutters around 5x,xxx shots (time-lapse photographers). Regardless, you should definitely ask the seller and take it into account; shutter replacement often exceeds the worth of the camera itself.
In your case, in a bad case scenario, that camera has already exceeded half of its life. But think of it this way: are you or will you be an avid photographer? You’d need to take 24 photos a day (1 roll) for over 2.5 years to accumulate the other 23,000. That’s a lot of photos — it’s something you’ve got to think about when buying used digital.
