Making night pictures with digital camera: how to do settings?
Are there any basic settings I should do when taking night pictures (of xmas scenes?)
(It’s a Nikon coolpix 5700)
With digital you can experiment as much as you like until you get the effect you are looking for!
It’s important to remember to use a good tripod to hold the camera and ideally use a cable-release (or the built in self-timer) to avoid any camera shake!
I usually put my camera in manual mode, open up the aperture and set the shutter speed for about 1 sec…… Obviously it all depends on the scene (available light etc)… but do a few test shots at different exposures and check the results!… You will soon find the approximate settings for the type of shots you are wishing to take!
One trick I used to nice effect…. I had very tight aperture and set shutter to about 5 secs…. while the shutter was open (pic being taken) I used a small cheap flash-gun quite a way off camera to light up some of the fore-ground objects with a single flash!… It takes a bit of experimenting, but that’s part of the Fun!
