DON’T LOSE SLEEP OVER LOST DATA – RECOVERY IS POSSIBLE
Oh no! You’ve accidentally formatted your digital camera’s memory card and your photos have disappeared. It’s a nightmare – what now?
Step one is to breathe deeply and relax. It’s not as bad as it seems. There’s an excellent chance that you’ll get your precious photos back intact unless the actual medium that they were stored on has been physically damaged. Don’t do ANYTHING if your images were stored on a device that can be rewritten. In other words, don’t try and write or save any more data onto the device. The best thing is to remove the device from the camera or hard drive, and store it out of harm’s way. Once the device has been overwritten, it will no longer be possible to recover your precious photos.
There are many different photo recovery tools available as well as tools for general data recovery – and not all of them use the same techniques. The internet is a good place to start your search as to what the best way forward is for your data recovery. Most good sites will have full instructions and tutorials on how to go about it, otherwise contact a reputable computer repairs organisation and they will give you good advice on how to proceed.
Some things to remember when creating photo archives in the future:
· Always burn two separate formats for the same photos
· Try to burn a whole CD at the same time, and avoid burning multiple sessions onto the same CD
· Rewritable CD-RW media can be corrupted easily by a software crash, so avoid storing valuable data on them
