could someone explain terms DX and AF-S Nikon terms?
Ok..i understand that canon has EF and EF-s lenses….the EF-s lenses only capable of being used on the cropped sensor cameras, but not full frame digitals or film cameras..
However, i don’t understand the nikon terms.
Does DX mean a cropped sensor. Are af-s lenses only for use with cropped sensor cameras, OR does af-s mean they have a built in focusing motor for nikon cameras without a focusing motor??
For that matter, do the canon cameras have a built in focusing motor?? I’ve never heard of this limitation with canon.
U have a very good understanding of the terms, actually.
DX lenses are designed for a cropped sensor on the Nikon system, although they also can also be used on Nikon’s full-frame digitals in a special “cropped” mode. DX lenses cannot be used on a film 35mm camera without getting some vignetting of the image.
AF-S refers only to having a built-in focusing motor in the lens. AF-S can include both DX and FX (full-frame) lenses. Sigma has a similar motor they call HSM, for hypersonic motor. U may sometimes hear the Nikon lenses referred to as “silent wave motors.”
Canon lenses have built-in motors in all their AF lenses, although not all of them are USM (ultrasonic motor) lenses.
The reason for the difference: years ago, when Canon switched to autofocusing lenses, they made a completely new mount, which made all their manual focus lenses incompatible. When Nikon went to an AF mount, they designed the AF system to keep the existing F-mount, which meant that some lenses were autofocused by the camera and newer lenses had the built-in motor. Initially, Nikon kept the motor in body on all new camera, but beginning with the D40, began making some bodies that only autofocused with lenses that had a built-in motor (D40, D40x, D60, and D5000).
