Would my flash from 35mm camera be compatible with a digital slr?
I have a Promaster FTD 5500 flash I used with my Nikon F100- would it be compatible with the Nikon D5000?
With some older flashes trigger voltages can threaten the electronics of digital cameras. That wasn’t a problem for mechanical film cameras.

I don’t think your flash has the dedicated pins to work in with the D5000 in the automatic or semi-automatic modes. It should work with the camera set to manual mode. The fastest compatible shutter speed for the D5000 is 1/200th sec.
