Second hand Digital Cameras?

I am looking at selling my 1 year old Canon EOS 1000d, and upgrading. However i don’t have enough money at the moment to be splashing out £1,000′s on a new camera.
I have found a website and a shop which sells second hand SLR’s.
Would you advise to avoid second hand cameras? Why?
For example i have found a second hand Canon 20D body for £250, and also an Canon EOS 1D body for £450.
Do cameras get worse over time and with use (the 1d has taken 140,000 shots), or do they keep the quality?

Because i want to upgrade it. My camera is the basic model, i want a better model.
Almost all my equipment is second hand. As long as the one you buy is neat, it shows that it’s been cared for. If it’s been battered around then a whole list of things can go wrong. I’d rather pay an extra £50-100 for 50k fewer clicks.
The shutters get sticky over time, and lose their sync with the flash. 1D is rated for 150k, though they can go further. £450 is a little over the odds for a 1D with 140k on it. 20D’s sell for around £200-£250 on ebay, though £300 for a decent 30D is probably a better choice.
Also consider the 5D classic a full frame camera, which at £700 is a steal, and the 1DmkII can be had for £700-900, and rated for 200k.
Anything in the xD and xxD series is going to be miles better than a rebel series, so it’s definitely worthwhile giving a used professional camera a go.
