Astrophotography Shortcut?
I have a Sony DSC-W100 digital camera. I can take up to a 30 second long exposure with it. If I wanted to take a picture of the milky way, could I take like 30 exposures and stack them? Would it look as if I took the picture with a much longer exposure? Could I get around without buying a digital slr camera by stacking 30 second exposures?
Do they have to be all different pictures or can it be one picture that I stack 30 times?
It depends on what you are imaging. For faint fuzzies such as galaxies or indeed the milky way as a cloud rather than specific objects in it, there it really no substitute for a long exposure. Readout noise becomes dominant in lucky imaging techniques if the object being imaged is too dim. Since each image has its own readout noise it doesn’t matter how many images you stack: there is no getting away from it. Added to that you need a bight point light source somewhere in the image in order to align the images and calculate Strehl ratios – you don’t need to worry about that particularly since your stacking software will do it for you.
As for the images, yes they all need to be different. Using the same image multiple times over you aren’t actually introducing any new data and therefore there is nothing to improve your image with. The images do not all need to be of precisely the same spot, contrary to what another respondent has written, provided the object of interest is in the field of view for all the photos. This makes tracking much easier. The software will do whatever rotation and alignment needs performing before it stacks the images.
