What type of camera should I buy?
I’ve been experimenting with a regular ‘point and shoot’ digital camera for a while and I’m thinking of buying a new, more advanced camera.
The type of photographs I usually take are of people- mostly candid shots and portraits.
I’ve been told to get a 35mm rangefinder but I’m not sure if its the best option for the type of photography I usually do.
I’m looking for a camera with advanced shooting modes and interchangable lenses.
Any suggestions?
I would look at getting a DSLR. Canon and Nikon are very good as are Pentax, Sony and Olympus. Canon and Nikon are the biggest and have the most available new lenses and accessories. Using a DSLR to it potential does require that you learn how to use it properly. I suggest you take a class or two. You can use it as a point and shoot but why spend all that money for an adjustable camera and use it on auto. Don’t be fooled into thinking that you need the most expensive camera that you can afford. The camera body will make little or no difference in the image quality. By the cheapest DSLR that has the features you need and put your money into lenses. Aside from your skill lenses are what will make the difference. Lenses are also not cheap. A good quality lens can easily cost what the camera itself costs. Lenses will last for decades though. A lens you bought today you would still be using 20 years from now. The same can’t be said for the camera. Technology will render whichever camera you buy obsolete in a few years.
Some cameras to look at would be the Canon Rebels or the Nikon D40 or D60. Go to a camera store and play around with them. Choose the one that feels best to you and has the controls where they make sense to you.
