what digital slr camera would you recommend for a beginner in photography?
im not looking for something that has tons of features in it.
i just want to point and shoot, high iso, low iso, fast shutter speed, low shutter speed and all that stuff

For student beginner photography don’t be so concerned with the megapixels. I’ve gone to print using a 2.1 megapixel canon elph before, the spreads turned out perfect. Also, the goal of any photographer is to get the best possible shot at the lowest possible iso. High iso settings are incredibly grainy and tend to look bad, unless you are shooting sports photography in low light. But that would warrant a pro setup. Also, don’t be so concerned on if it is a Nikon or a Canon. Both are great brands and are considered the Visa and Mastercard of the industry. Each brand will offer a great body for your needs. If someone says one is better than the other, well, they just haven’t experienced the full gamut of both lines. I personally use both.
For a first camera under $500 I’d suggest going for an older SLR from either Nikon or Canon. Purchase a prime lens separately. An AF 50mm f1.8 will cost about $80-$130 depending on if it is Canon or Nikkor.
Check older bodies online. I saw a Canon 30d for for about $350 the other day on ebay.
Ultimately for under $500, I’d go for a Nikon d50 combined with a 50mm 1.8 off of Amazon. If you go for the latest plastic gimmicky releases from either manufacturer, you’ll get caught up in higher prices and cheap outfit lenses, which ultimately get put aside in a few years. Don’t bother investing huge amounts of money into a plastic body until it is constructed of magnesium alloy (D700 and up, Mark series and up). That’s where the line between consumer and prosumer is drawn. Till then, they’re all in the same boat of mediocrity if you ask me.
Don’t forget you will need a memory card. Again for learning, a 1-2gb card will work great. Go for the faster cards to avoid the slow read/write times. I suggest the SanDisk Extreme series.
Nikon is going to be releasing a new SLR body on 10/15/09, to me that means prices will drop for us consumers on older bodies.
