Compact Waterproof Digital Camera Continue To Gain Market Share
Technology has made is possible for the ordinary, amateur photographer to own a truly waterproof digital camera. You can drop one in the pool, river, lake, ocean or bathtub then fish it out and continue using it. More seriously, you can jump in the water with it and photograph your friends snorkeling, surfing or whatever.
Most people who own a compact watertight unit swear by them and frequently claim they offer so much freedom outdoors that they would never return to using a standard, non-waterproof unit. There is no need to treat these units with care and respect; no need to hide under an umbrella to snap pictures outdoors when it rains. They are built tough.
Watertight units are generally shock-proof and freeze-proof. They are a robust item waiting for adventure. Costing only a few hundred dollars, these brawny units will operate at a water depth of 10 meters, up high on freezing ski slopes where the temperature stays below zero degrees Celsius. Most can survive being dropped to the floor from a height of about a meter.
Of course, compact cameras are unlikely to capture as good an image as dSLRs. However, compact waterproof units can be expected, eventually, to take photos comparable to those of a standard digital compact. Buying expensive and bulky watertight housings is now something necessary only in the case of high quality dSLRs.
Watertight digitals have been commercially available since 2002. Virtually all of the leading brands have launched a model in this class. The functionality and versatility is very impressive. The current generation feature fast processors, high resolution sensors, wide angle lenses, built-in image stabilization as well as large and high resolution LCD screens. The quality of their images is very high and comparable to many standard compact cameras. Being compacts, they are truly pocketable.
However, because this segment is still relatively young, the functionality available on watertight units does not match the sophistication of standard compacts. For instance, fast shutter speeds, continuous shooting, high definition video and large range zoom lenses are still not widely present on most models in this class. Only a few models currently possess these functionalities.
Watertight units have internal zoom lenses, rather than extending lenses. This helps water and other foreign matter from entering the camera body. As with waterproof watches, watertight cameras recommend owners have the unit seal professionally checked every twelve months to make sure it remains secure and watertight.
For now, it is probably best to consider waterproof digital cameras as a specialist tool, something to be purchased in addition to a standard compact. However, as their resolution improves, zoom range increases and general functionality expands, they will become the one and only compact owned by the amateur photographer.
