The Secrets of Buying a Digital Camera
Nowadays digital cameras are very commonly used to capture your precious memories, whether in your work or during your leisure times. The right digital camera is an important handy tool to snap shots of your family and friends, work, or special occasions to permanently preserve them in soft copies. They can be stored easily and be sent to your friends and relatives far away with a few clicks in the internet.
There are certain criteria when choosing to buy a digital camera:-
- Size — it should not be too big, too small or too heavy for you. The key point is it must very comfortable to carry along and you always want to have it ready nearby
- Types – in the market there are countless models and makes
- Price – again the price could range from below a hundred dollars to a few thousand depending on the functions and features
Types of digital cameras
- Compact – these are by far the most popular digital cameras in the market. They are used topoint-and-shoot and are usually small and compact in size. They do not have complicated photo taking features and are best for taking snapshots and casual photographs.
- Digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) – these cameras are for professional photographers, serious amateurs and enthusiasts. In short this type of cameras has almost zero delay time when taking photographs when the button is clicked or pressed. They have faster response time as compared to compact digital cameras. Most important of all, they provide a very wide array of features and functions to control every aspect of photo taking.
- Prosumer (or bridge) – prosumer means a combination of professional and consumer in terms of features and functions. This is in fact an in between of a compact and DSLR camera. And is most appealing to people who want to have more features and options than that come with a compact camera but do not wish to pay for the higher priced and more complex DSLR cameras.
Price Range
In general digital cameras are divided into three price range costing $50 to 300, $300 to $650 and above $650.
- From $50-$300 — These cameras are cheap and usually very compact in size and therefore very easy to carry along (you can even slip into your pocket). If you are not after the more advanced features of more expensive cameras, this could your choice, especially it is for casual photography. Normally the learning curve of using the camera is very short and it is simply aim and shoot!
- From $300-$650 — Being more expensive, these cameras would come with a broader range of features and functions. And you could expect a fair bit of automatic features to shoot under a wider range of conditions. Normally they are heavier and bigger in size and may include some low-end DSLRs, mostly prosumer models and some compact cameras. As they come with more advanced features and functions, do expect that it will take some time to overcome the learning curve in order to take some really good pictures.
- Above $650 — These cameras are mostly used by professional photographer and avid amateurs. They come with full gears and combination of exchangeable lenses. A very good one could easily cost you more than $2,000 to 3,000. These are all DSLRs and provide very good functions and features and can used to take all kinds of photographs in all kinds of conditions.
Having said all the above, the choice to buy a digital camera is entirely a personal choice taking into consideration of size, type and price of the camera.
