Today’s digital cameras are equipped with technology that is driven by software applications which does not call for any skill of the user to adjust lenses, check the setting and lights, aperture etc. Every thing is automatic and requires you to just click on one button. These fully automatic cameras have self adjusting mechanism that sets the lenses, controls light and zooms and only requires you to aim and click.
What about the post clicking process? . The digital cameras do not use film roles but the images are stored as files which can be downloaded on to a PC for viewing. The images do not have to be printed on paper alone but is popularly being saved on media storage devices and in laptops, mobiles etc for instant retrieval.
Should we presume then that the technology has killed the magic, fun and art of shooting pictures with cameras? Ask any photographer, they are likely to agree with you. Until a few years ago it was considered a fine art to be able to shoot pictures and required considerable knowledge and skill on part of the photographer to be able to capture the scene in its entirety and originality. People found it extremely satisfying to be able to put their techniques and efforts to use and exhibit their mastery by clicking good quality pictures. Now it seems as though the automatic cameras require you to only aim and click thereby have throw all the skills of the photographers out of the window.
Photographers always believe that photo image is their language of romance with which they express their perceptions and words in visual appeal. Just like how a solder loves his weapons and a painter his brush and paint, so does the photographer love his camera. It was not very cheap and affordable for Photographers to buy lenses and had to save up huge amounts to be able to afford the costly accessories which they considered to be lifetime assets.Shooting pictures was not all, one had to be able to develop the film in the dark room, build the master, do the color separation and create negatives to be able to print multi colored images. This was purely a manual job and the quality of the photo print entirely depended upon the precision and quality of the film development and color separation and made photographers proud of their skill.
Actually to recall, the earliest cameras were the big black boxes made with jet-black canvas, mounted on huge stand with the shutter and lenses at one end and the film at the other end. To recall those manual cameras and the entire process of photography brings back the magic of pictures before the mind’s eye.
There is no more development of films with digital camera, but only downloading of pictures in files to PC for viewing.The digital animation artists are trained on using different kinds of texture, light and filters on the images to produce the desired quality of image. They take off from where the photographers have left off. However this does not undermine the fact that it is the photographers keen sense of beauty that creates beautiful images. End of the day with what ever technological development, it cannot replace the creativity, art and skill of the photographer who shoots the magic photograph.
