Stolen digital camera… How to trace with posted images?
Hello.
Recently, one of my people I know lost his digital camera during a Singapore
trip. I have read and heard that image/photograph files can be traced
with their embedded datas like serial numbers or something. How does
this work? How can one tell what the camera used and used in the image
files? I know it is probably impossible to do this and get it back, but
I am just curious if I ever run into recognizable images online.

There is data recorded by the camera in the EXIF data on every digital image. The serial number of the camera should be in there. You can view the EXIF data on some images, if the data hasn’t been removed, by using an EXIF viewer. Some image editing software allows you to view this information, or you could even get the EXIF viewer plugin if you use Firefox. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3905/
However, finding it would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. As far as I know, no search engines allow you to search images by the EXIF data.
