What Features Are Important in Buying a Camera?
Not so many years ago, only the wealthy could afford a good camera. Most of us were content with a point-and-shoot model. But this changed when electronics and digital cameras became reasonable. Now for the same price you can get a camera with features we only dreamed about before. And we can make our own prints or share electronic versions of the pictures with others. In fact, so many wonderful features are available today, it’s difficult to know just what to buy. Here is a checklist to use when buying a camera.
First, determine what is your purpose in buying a camera? Are you mainly going to share the pictures online? Will you use it to take mainly indoor or outdoor pictures? Are you going to take mostly still pictures or sporting events? Will they be simple or specialty pictures like extreme close-ups or pictures of the moon?
Next, determine your price range. The old rule is still true: you will get what you pay for. However, you could get a lot more camera than you need. Thus, these are important questions to answer. If you are new at photography or don’t care for all the complex settings, then don’t get them. Instead, look for a less expensive simple model of some kind.
Cameras are often featured for how many megapixels they have. This megapixel figure simply tells the maximum resolution it can take. A larger number means that you can take larger, clearer pictures A number of nine or more means that the camera can take clear pictures for enlarging. However, these pictures will be multiple megabytes in size. If your main plan is to email pictures, or upload them onto a family website, then such huge pictures will take inordinate amounts of time to upload and for them to download.
Digital cameras have an LCD screen on the back that enables you to see the subject of your picture and the picture after you take it. Be sure this screen is plenty big to see the image clearly and to see what you are taking even in bright light. The lens size will usually determine the zoom range. The larger the camera, the better the flash, generally. But you can zoom into a subject from a distance far greater than the flash can handle. Larger cameras have a flash boot on top that activates add-on flashes. Generally, the more bulky the camera, the better the flash and the lens, but the less portable and more expensive it is.
You may want additional features such as the built in delay shutter so the photographer can get into the picture as well. Some LCD screens can be rotated which is great for over the head or below the waist pictures, or for seeing what your self-portrait will look like. Digital cameras are now able to take video as well.
Check online reviews of the camera you are interested in before you set your heart on getting it. Unbiased reviewers and owners are usually pretty honest. Check out the type of batteries it uses. Be sure they are standard AA or AAA batteries or else batteries could be expensive. Also check the memory card to see if it is the same style as other devices you own. Is it compatible with your printer and/or computer?
Not only read the consumer reviews, but also go to a store where you can see and feel the camera, even if you don’t buy it there. Also, read the warranty. Do you want to purchase the extended warranty? For electronics, I generally do, for too much can go wrong and few will know how to fix it if it malfunctions.
Once you buy it, don’t keep reading the ads. Be content with your purchase instead of wishing you had gotten something else. Learn how to use it by reading the manual and trying out the various features it has. Photography is a wonderful means of conserving memories. There is no reason to delay checking out just what camera is right for you.
