Crooked SLR Film Camera Lens; WHAT DO I DO?

If you can tell, the part of the lens that focuses is crooked. I don’t know when this happened or how, it couldve resulted from me stuffing this camera with my digital nikon into the same bag.
It’s a nikon FM10 and the lens is a Nikkor 35-70 mm- I don’t really know what my question is, I guess its will this drastically affect what my pictures look like, and is it going to cost hundreds of dollars to repair it?
It isn’t even my camera, it’s a school camera, I’m about to have a meltdown.
Snappy, no need to worry! I used to work in my college equipment rental department and this kind of thing happens all the time, even with professional quality equipment–which this lens is not!
This is a cheap lens that came with the camera and is not build to handle all the use it probably gets every semester. The folks at your school know this and will be understanding. You personally probably didn’t break it but rather all the use of everyone using it has worn on it and you were just the unlucky person to have it when it finally failed. The school probably has insurance on nicer equipment and simply has budget to cover things like this with cheaper equipment. This is what they are in the business of doing!
I honestly would suggest finding a Nikkor 50mm prime lens to use if you are just learning photography. These produce nicer images than that particular zoom and will teach you about depth of field and minimum handheld shutter speed more easily. They also are much less likely to break!
As for your photos, I really couldn’t tell you exactly how this will affect them but you can bet you’ll have focusing issues as well as maybe some other weird optical aberrations.
Last night my girlfriend was shooting a concert on my Nikon FM2n which was just back from repairs when the shutter completely broke. These things happen to cameras and all technical equipment. You just have to roll with it by carrying two cameras and multiple lenses to all important shoots.
