What setting can I put my digital camera on that will show the lights on the tree? ?
It’s a Sony point and shoot cyber shot. I have tried it with the flash, and it looks like a daytime photo of a tree with no lights, and I have tried it with no flash and it ends up coming out blurry because the processing takes too long.

You can get decent night time or low light pics from a point and shoot you just have to spank that little cam to get it to work for you.
Ok, you have a few options here.
First, leaving your camera in auto, place it on a rock solid object, a table or chair, whatever works if you don’t have a tripod. Turn the flash off. Aim fire, make sure the camera doesn’t move a single hair.
In low light, the shutter needs to stay open a long time, so it’s crucial that you keep that camera steady.
Next repeat the shot but go out of ‘auto’ mode, and into your camera’s night mode. It’s usually represented by a symbol usually a little moon shape and a star.
Repeat.
Next, try on auto AND in the night mode. Go into your camera’s menu and look for your ISO setting. Force it into ISO 100. The reason you need to try this way as well is that in dark scenes, your camera will increase the ISO, which can make your pics look dirty and grainy.
The shutter will need to stay open even longer at a low ISO like 100 or 200, so make sure it doesn’t move.
Now check what you’ve got.
In case the camera kept the shutter open too long, and it’s overly bright, you will need to get into the menu and look for [exposure compensation]. It’s usually simple, just a + and – kinda thing, make small adjustments and repeat.
I know you’ll get the pic you want, just be patient. Your little point and shoots can do a lot more than you think. Most people just leave it in auto and just assume that’s as good as it gets. Nothing could be further from the truth.
I now use a large and expensive dSLR camera with pro lenses, but I remember squeezing everything out of my little fuji pocket digital cam because it’s all I had.
