selling on ebay to international buyer- advisable?
selling a high end digital camera on ebay, have an inquiry from an individual in the Ukraine to the asking if I’d ship there, he’d pay the higher rate. I’m a pretty experienced ebayer, but dont normally ship overseas and my listing states as much. This fella’s feedback is high, he has recent stateside activity. Wondering- are there potential issues, scams, etc? Can I track a package to the Ukraine and get a delivery confirmation (as USPS offers, I know, domestically)…or best to just avoid international shipping altogether, or is that being rash at the expense of a possible buyer?

I sell internationally on ebay all the time. i have never sent anything overseas that went for over $200, so you have to do what you feel comfortable with, but here is some of my experience.
If you are going to use the US postal service, shipping will be cheaper than UPS or Fedex. HOWEVER, I wouldn’t ever use the International first class option or the flat rate priority envelope b/c there is no way to look anything up online for your or the buyer. If you send it international priority mail, you can at least buy extra insurance and also something called certificate of mailing. this certificate of mailing at least proves to your buyer that the article was mailed out. The post office does not have any way to actually get a delivery confirmaton for internatonal mail–they can only track it as far as leaving the United states.
Paypal has this new thing with seller protection that you have to be able to have proof of delivery. To avoid ever being on the losing end of a paypal chargeback, you could do 2 things.
the first would be to use UPS to Ukraine–they deliver there but you will need the buyers town and postal code to determine the the shipping price online. this would give you proof of delivery and tracking but it is a lot more expensive, but if your item is very valuable the buyer would probably appreciate this extra security for them as well.
You can also only accept an international money order in US funds from the buyer–this way they pay the fees to convert currencies and you could hold it for 10 business days the way most sellers do for personal US checks. you would get your money and not have to think about Paypal coming back later if there is a problem.
I still use post office international priority mail for my overseas packages, b/c you can buy insurance for loss/damage/theft and the certicate of mailing to prove things on your end, but it is best to add a statement in your listing saying you are not responsible for loss/theft/damage on shipments and all sales are final and being sold as-is. Most of the time everything gets delivered w/o a hitch but some countries are pretty corrupt–Italy, Thailand, etc and things get stolen unless you insure them.
I would probably recommend using UPS for high dollar items b/c of the tracking and proof of delivery–this way you can get your money fast through paypal and the buyer gets added protection.
You can get a lot more money when you open your bids up to internationals–especially now b/c the us $ is so low. I always ship worldwide and i would say 20% of my business is outside of USA
Also, on international shipments, I add an extra handling of $5-10 b/c of exchange rates and extra paperwork in addition of regular handling charge for shipping supplies. i have never had any complaints yet.
Explain to the bidder that UPS is more but it is for their protection.
