What is better – a digital SLR with 500mm mirror lens or a brand new consumer camera with built in superzoom?
I want a camera that will take a good quality photos at but from a long distance. My budget is not particularly high so I have looked at cameras like the Fuji S4000 with 30x zoom lens. I don’t understand entirely how that amount of zoom can be achieved in a such a small space when a true 700mm lens is well… 700mm long! Am I better off buying an old, used digital SLR and maybe a 500mm ‘mirror lens’?

Money aside, it really depends on what you’d like. SLRs are amazing pieces of work, but the consumer camera market has made quite some strides, and you no longer need a SLR to take great photos. If you’re a serious photographer, get the SLR because it’ll pay off with its diversity; if you’re just snapping photos at family get-togethers, a consumer cam will carry there and beyond.
