How can I adjust my digital camera settings to capture motion indoors?
Outside my camera works great for any picture without me having to change too much. But inside I can’t seem to catch good clear pictures of my pets, portraits or any motion. Is there a particular setting I should be using?
As the other two replies mentioned, one of the most obvious solutions is to increase your camera’s ISO setting. The higher the setting, the less light the camera needs to freeze motion with a high enough shutter speed. However, what the other two did not mention is that the cost for using high ISO is additional noise in the image. In the old film days, a high ISO (or ASA) rated film would have higher grain as a cost for the “faster” film speed. In digital cameras, you get more noise rather than larger film grain. So, only increase the ISO just enough to allow your shutter speed to remain at least 1/60th of a second, to prevent (or reduce) motion blur.
Additionally, use a flash with your camera (built-in or hot shoe). This should lighten up the subject and also freeze the motion well.
Now, here is a tip when using flash indoors. If you use a moderately slow shutter speed — 1/30 to 1/60 of a second , rather than 1/100 or 1/125 (or higher) the background of your image will be brighter as well, and will better match the lighting from the flash on your subject positioned closer to the camera. Otherwise, if the shutter speed is too fast, the flash will light up the close subject and fall off within 10-15 or so (depending on the flash) and the background will be much darker by comparison.
