I would like to take pictures of the sky. HELP!?
I know nothing about camers. Only knowledge I have is my digital camera (Olympus stylus 720 sw). And even then, I don’t know what all the lingo on it is all about. ANYWAY, I would love to take pictures of the sky. I go to the desert a lot, and I would love to somehow capture the stars and moon, maybe with a desert setting, maybe just solely of the sky. I don’t care for the sun or real big close ups. Just the beautiful desert nights. All my camera does to the moon is make it into a blurry white blob and all of the scenery is black.
Is there a camera, lenses, novice package deal that can do what I am looking for?? Any tips or simple instructions. I just need a clear shot of a starry night… or moon. Anything out there for someone like me? THANK YOU!
First of all, get a tripod.
Secondly, the 720 SW has a maximum shutter speed of 4 seconds, which almost certainly won’t be enough for stars. Moon, yes — it is, after all, an object lit by the sun.
So you’re going to need a tripod and a camera that has the ability to shoot longer exposures. Some will do up to 30 seconds, some will have a Bulb mode meaning that the shutter will remain open as long as you hold the button down (but a cable release is a better idea so you’re not touching and moving the camera even a little).
Additional note: the moon’s moving pretty fast whether it seems like it or not. Even with a tripod you’ll get some blur on longer exposures because of that. To get stars and landscape in full dark, you’re going to need some long exposures — 5 to 15 minutes.
