How many megapixels should a good digital camera have?

7 is a fine number. Megapixels are a measure of pixels per square inch. On this page, from white edge to white edge is 1000 pixels. Mega-pixels (mega is latin for million) is X Million pixels per inch. So a 7 megapixel camera will give an 8×10 print-out with clear quality. Unless you are doing professional photography, you really won’t need anything larger than 10 megapixels. If you plan on cropping and zooming in on your pictures while editing, then you would want, say 14 megapixels because some of your clarity will be lost in the editing.
I have a 23 megapixel camera and i have printed images as large as 24×36… and the pixels were just starting to show.
12.1 is a good number, you will just be able to print larger pictures with more clarity.
