Which compact digital camera to buy? pls help? T100 vs T200 vs FX55 vs SD870?
I have shortlisted to 4 digital cameras that fits and needs and purpose, but confused which one to choose from. Camera experts, pls help!!!
My shortlists (not in any order of preference):
1) Sony DSC T200 – 8MP, 3.5″ TOUCH screen, 5x optical zoom, face dectector and smile shutter,
2) Sony DSC T100 – 8MP, 3″ LCD, 5x optical zoom, face detector,
3) Canon SD870 IS (860 IXUS) – 8MP, 3″ LCD, 3.8x optical zoom, Wide angle lens 28mm – 105mm
4) Panasonic DMC FX-55 – 8MP, 3″ LCD, 3.6x optical zoom, Wide angle lens 28mm -100mm
TomTom, pls could u give some justfication for selecting SD870?
Honestly, I would advise for the SD870IS as well. Here’s why:
1) Sony’s use of proprietary memory storage: the Memory Stick is manufactured by Sony only for use in only Sony products. If you buy this camera, and then move on to a different one, unless it is another Sony camera, you’ll have to buy a new memory card. The Panasonic and SD870IS use SD cards, which are 1) faster than Memory Stick 2) available from many more manufacturers and 3) a lot cheaper per GB. SD is becoming the most popular form of flash memory storage on the market, so you can feel confident that you will be able to use it in your next camera.
2) Although the “smile” shutter seems like a good idea, initial tests have shown that it’s still exactly that…a good idea, but with poor execution. Reviews have shown that this is more of a gimmick than something that actually works, so why pay more for it? Also, the Canon has face detection as well.
I would avoid touch screens. Again, cool idea, but the consequences can be drastic. If any part of the LCD fails at any point in time, you’ll have to foot a significant bill to fix/replace that LCD screen. I would stick with something with physical buttons that will be a lot less costly/invasive to replace.
So, between the Panasonic and the Canon, I would probably take the Canon. Slightly longer optical zoom, and it has the AiAF focusing system which is a little more advanced than the Panasonics, and it features Canon’s newest image processor DIGIC 3, which has been getting some good reviews as far as pictures at higher ISOs is concerned versus the Panasonic. Also, the Canon is cheaper by $30 over the Sony models, which can then be used to buy yourself a new SD card.
