How do you take a picture where the focus is on the person in the pic and the background is out of focus?
I have a Kodak cx7530.
I used to be able to do this with my canon that takes mm film by holding the button down halfway then taking the pic.
But how do do that with a Kodak digital camera.
I have no idea where the manual is
It’s not holding the button half-way that made the background blur, it’s the natural quality of 35mm camera, because your lens focal length was a lot longer than on your kodak, plus it was likely a lot faster.
The digital point and shoot cameras have very tiny sensors, hence their lenses focal lengths are also tiny, making depth of field very wide easily. What you want is shallow depth of field. It is very tough to get with your Kodak, but possible.
There are three things that you can do:
1. Open aperture wide. Set your camera on aperture priority (if it has one) and set aperture to smallest number you can. If no aperture priority, try setting it on “portrait” mode, which should create a similar effect.
2. Zoom in. The longer focal length, the shallower DOF.
3. Get close to subject. The closer you are, the shallower depth of field.
Also having background some distance away from main subject will help a lot. The three things above are easier said than done. If you zoom in, your aperture decreases, and also zooming in and getting close works poorly, as you’d only be able to get a tiny subject this way. So you’ll have to try to experiment with different combinations of the above.
As to half pressing the shutter button – all that does is focusing the camera on whatever is in the focus point and lets you re-compose the image without having to keep the main subject in dead center. With all sorts of “face detection” features on today’s p&s cameras this may not be necessary, though I’m sure your Kodak too has the half pres function. Can also be used to pre-focus and take the shot faster when everyone is ready.
