Spirit of Washington:

This category is open to all photographers, 18 years of age and older. With a single iconic image, capture the spirit and essence of Washington, DC. Find the visual expression of what makes this city, our nation's capital, unique among American cities.


General and Student Entries:

Single Image
Photojournalism/Social Documentary*:

A single image with a documentary/reportage focus. This includes domestic and international spot or general news and issue reporting. Images may not be staged/posed, composites, multiple exposures, or digitally manipulated beyond the reality that existed when the image was made, except for reasonable dodging and burning.

Fine Art*:

A single image that has been created to fulfill the artistic vision of the photographer.

Contemporary Life*:

A single image with a lifestyle/human interest focus. Photography that presents a fresh view of everyday activities, sports, relationships or emotion. Includes wedding photography.

Travel*:

A single image conveying sense of place; from exotic to backyard, urban to wild. Includes architecture, landscapes, waterscapes, aerials, wildlife.

Portrait*:

A single image that focuses on an individual and captures unique aspects of their experience or personality.

Series
Photojournalism/Social Documentary:

A series of images (up to 6, minimum 3) exploring the human condition to facilitate social change. Series images should focus on the compelling issues of our time, and may include global warming, war, poverty, international justice and the environment.

Fine Art:

A series (up to 6 images, minimum of 3) created to fulfill the artistic vision of the photographer.

Environmental Conservation-Special Category in honor of the International Year of Biodiversity:

A series (up to 6 images, minimum of 3) focused on the natural world and efforts being made to preserve it for the future.

Commercial*:

A series (up to 6 images, minimum of 3) created for the purpose of communicating or selling ideas, services or products.

Mobile Phone Category:

New this year! For the first time ever, FotoWeek DC is accepting submissions in a special Mobile Phone category. All subjects are eligible and winners will be determined based on uniqueness and best use of this new photographic medium.

Multimedia

Work that may include still photography, video, sound and graphics to either communicate a reality-based narrative story or is freely expressionistic.
