Looking to purshase a Digital SLR Camera?
I am looking into purchasing a DSLR. The only thing I know about DSLR is the number on the lens……….higher the number closer I can zoom into a object. I have two Canon digital cameras SD750 & Powershot S2-IS. I have loved using both camera and I have come to like the Canon brand. I often take pics of any/everything from a little lizard to a cruise ship out on the ocean. I am just looking to move up in camera.
I’ve been searching DSLR’s in the net and found these (one is a Sony that was not as expensive)

Depending on what you want to do – it sounds like you want to develop your photography beyond what a point-and-shoot can do – you will need to think about what additional lenses/flash/remotes etc etc you will need to acquire in the future – and how much you could end up spending – this will be a factor in your system choice.
Are you going to shoot portraits in the studio: controlled environment, tripod, flash, light and color temperature metered; or will you be more opportunistic, needing a wide range zoom to capture a head-shot, then a building or landscape in the next shot. No single camera/lens will give the best for all the possible circumstances (which is why pro’s have big bags with lots of kit), so you need to decide which is the most likely one for you, buy the best you can for that, and accept some compromise.
The big brands: Canon and Nikon are, in my view almost equal. Each new model is different, hopefully better, than before, and the 2 play a game of leap-frog on specifications and performance which is constantly changing – one having the lead for a time, the other overtaking it, and so on.
Again, there is a massive range of 3rd party lenses and accessories for Canon and Nikon, there are less options with Sony, though the Zeiss lenses are absolutely top-end, with top-end prices too! The 3rd party lenses (Sigma/Tamron and others) are lower priced than the OEM product, because the manufacturers can make them fit many different camera types, and hence have bigger production volumes, and lower costs, which is passed on in lower consumer prices.
Though you should always try and “make the picture in the camera”, you will probably want to consider some post-processing software if you do not already have it: Photoshop/Lightroom/Aperture, or maybe try the free Google editor – link below. Most Canon cameras bundle their own software, for some Nikon kits it is an extra.
I would start off with a decent Canon or Nikon body, with a 3rd party zoom, say 30-200mm or greater range, with a macro setting. The Tamron 18-200mm f3.5-6.3 XR DI II is a good-value example, but it does not have image stabilization – this adds c50% to the price!
The site below is a commercial one (I have no association with them, other than as a customer) and has a camera selection guide which you might find helpful.
I am a Canon user (since 1991) – so I think it is the best – but that is just my personal opinion, others will have strong views on other makes.
My final though is: buy what you decide to, then do not look at photo magazines or camera tests for a year – it will likely make you think you have made the wrong choice! Just shoot, and be your own judge of your results.
