Should I go for a DSLR or a Canon powershot sx200 IS?
So I’m thirteen years old, and I would really love to get more serious about photography. I’ve had quite a few digital compact cameras, FUJIFILM, kodak, all that jazz. However I was never satisfied without my canon. Probably a deal breaker on a camera would be for it to have a macro setting. I’m currently using a fairly older Model, the Canon powershot a460, that I purchased about 3 years ago, its not the most attractive but I absolutely love it. Im pretty much set on canons and my budget is about 600 dollars, but anything cheaper would of course be wonderful (:
I was thinking the sx200, because the zoom looks phenomenal, and its fairly compact which makes it look easy to carry around with me. If I were to go for a DSLR, I was thinking something like the Canon rebel XS, that comes with a lens. So what I’m wondering if its worth buying a DSLR?
Oh and PS: I use my camera often, so any camera wouldn’t go to waste.

There’s no comparison really. One is a compact point & shoot camera with a small sensor and the other is a dSLR with a large sensor.
A camera with a large sensor will always be better than a camera with a small sensor.
In the SX200 IS’s favour….ummm, 12x optical zoom. But, it’s definitely not one of Canon’s better compact cameras when it comes to image quality. One of it’s dumbest features is the flash. It pops up as soon as you turn the camera on, and stays up until you turn the camera off, whether you need the flash or not.
In the XS’s favour…everything, but the 12x optical zoom. You can buy it with the kit lens (which has IS) and once you know what focal lengths or styles of photography you prefer…you could think about buying a new lens or two. A good lens (especially a zoom lens) doesn’t come cheap, though.
An excellent and very cheap prime lens (one focal length) is the EF 50mm f/1.8. It costs less than US$100. I’d highly recommend it. It will allow you to shoot in low light and is perfect for portraits, etc. For good macro shots, you need a Macro lens, because you just can’t get great Macro shots using the Macro setting on your camera.
good luck…and don’t forget that you need to use the viewfinder on a dSLR to compose your shots, which is a lot better than holding your camera out at arm’s length to take a shot.
