Need help to chose?
I’m just a beginner in photography and need help to chose which camera is best for the price and for beginners there both cost about $400
1.Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (EOS-350D), 8.0 Megapixel, SLR Digital Camera Kit w/ Canon 18-55mm EF-S Lens
2.Nikon D40, 6.1 Megapixel, SLR, Digital Camera w/ 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor Autofocus Lens Kit
I can only give you an opinion: I would choose the Nikon because it has had some great reviews buy Ken Rockwell.

You need to actually hold both in your hands and see which feels best to your hands and fits your style of shooting. Technically they are both fine cameras and made by the two companies who make the cameras the pro photographers use.
The slight difference between 6MP and 8MP will not be noticeable
