Recommendations for a first time digital slr buyer?
Hi there, I’m looking to purchase my very first digital SLR camera and start learning about photography. I have 2 Canon elf point and shoots, but no real experience with SLR’s. I have spent countless hours reading and researching online and I am at a loss as to what SLR would best suit my needs. I’m looking for the best camera within my budget (up to 700) that will allow me to take professional looking and artistic photos of my family. I can’t take a class but have purchased photography books, now to pick out my camera! Any help, advice, recommendations are GREATLY appreciated! Thanks and have a great day!
You can’t go wrong if you get the entry level SLR from any major brand: Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus, Fujifilm, Panasonic, Sony, etc. They are all capable of far better images than you can take with your current skill level. So go into a camera store and ask to handle the different models. Pick one that feels comfortable in your hands and which has controls and a menu structure that makes more sense to you. Ignore the sale clerk when he tells you that more megapixels is better. It’s not. And don’t let him talk you into “going up to the next level”. Also resist suggestions to buy add-ons like a filter to “protect your lens”, unless you plan to shoot in hostile environments or swing your camera around wildly. If you want peace of mind in this area, get a lens hood instead. All of these sales suggestions have the goal of getting you to spend more money, not take better pictures.
