I’ve got a Canon EOS 5D digital camera. What kind of lens?
My husband has this camera and he is always saying he wants a new lens for it. I want to get it for Xmas but I don’t know ANYTHING about cameras. He wants a lens that can zoom far and do close ups, because his doesn’t. What kind should I get? I think the brand on the lens he has now is “TAMRON”?
Also, if anyone knows a good camera shop or place I can get one in Los Angeles.

I sure hope hes not using a Tamron on a 5D, that would pretty much destroy any image quality the camera had to offer. The thing about a nice full frame camera like that is that they bring out every defect in a lens and so require either Canon L series lenses or some of the good EF mount single focal length (prime) lenses to really shine. Within that selection I dont think there is a really a good do it all sort of lens that zooms really far and does macro. Does he only have one lens right now? My suggestion if he wants a really far zoom lens thats going to be the proper quality and good for wildlife and such is the EF 100-400 f/4.5-5.6 IS USM L lens made by Canon. This lens does cost around $1100 but thats the least you will want to spend on a zoom lens for a full frame. You could go for the 70-200 f/2.8 USM which is way better in low light for things like concerts, but does not zoom nearly as far, 200mm vs 400mm. You will have to decide which would be best for him. For macro lenses there are two choices: EF 100mm f/2.8 USM macro and the EF 180mm f/3.5 USM L macro lens. If you have the money for the 180mm lens great, if not the 100mm lens is fantastic and many photographers swear by both for macro and portraits. I own that lens and can attest to its sharpness and good image and build quality. The 100mm f/2.8 lens costs around $450 or so. Unfortunately expensive cameras require expensive lenses, and you are going to have to pick between a zoom and a macro. There is no good quality zoom lens that happens also to be good for macro. You could look into extension tubes, but thats a whole other question.
