Is it possible to reduce noise in digital camera photos by shooting at a lower resoluton than the maximum?
I have a Canon Powershot S5 IS and I am frustrated that the more expensive camera you buy, the noisier the results. I haven’t the time or the money to get into SLR territory.
No, it’s not possible. Resolution has nothing to do with noise. Noise is brought about by static electrical impulses in the sensor. Raising the ISO raises the sensitivity of the sensor, which enables the sensor to be more sensitive to light, but at the same time the snesor also becomes sensitive to the static noise.
What you can do is take a full resolution photo and then resize to a smaller photo in Photoshop. For best results you can use “Noise Ninja” or “Dfine” by Nik Color Efex. These are third party programs that pluin to Photoshop. These programs scans digital photo for the noise patterns then removes the noise from photos.
