Are the brands “Olympus” & “Pentax” for DSLR’s good? or as good as canon and nikon?
i honestly cannot afford canon a nikon cameras. my grandpa is sending me $400 for a camera. so i can’t spend anything above 400.

update: fhotoace is not an “old film guy”, but someone from whom I’ve learned much. You ASKED about DSLR’s so we are responding about DSLR’s. I’d hesitate to besmirch a top contributor while hiding behind private Q&A settings, like some people.
As for Ken Rockwell? He’s an eccentric writer, but one who does contribute well to the discussion. I visit his site daily and find him informative.
A P&S camera is smaller and can fit in your purse or pocket. BUT, it is limited to what you get when you open the box. If you want something to grow with (and I hope you do) then a DSLR is the wiser path.

Soundbridge also brings excellent words to this discussion. Amazing how one poster here is spending time bad-mouthing all other contributors. A bridge camera is not a DSLR. It may be closer than a point and shoot, but it cannot replace a DSLR in function, quality, flexibility, and potential. They are a necessary compromise to fit a need. I doubt you’ll find many wedding photographers, sports shooters, or photojournalists plying their trade with a bridge camera.
